Beef Stir Fry, a Quick and Healthy Weeknight Meal

I often crave Asian flavors but don’t get to cook Asian dishes nearly as frequently as I’d like. And really, I have no excuse not to … we live just minutes from the second largest Asian community here in New York and I’ve got every Asian ingredient (common or exotic) right here at my fingertips. So, a couple of weeks ago instead of heading to our local Mediterranean fruit and vegetable market I pulled into the parking lot of the Korean supermarket closest to our home and set out to pull a few ingredients from the shelves that I could throw together to make a meal suitable to our family’s palates …  and this quick and easy Beef Stir Fry was the result.


All you need for this simple dish to work are fresh, good quality ingredients. A versatile wok will also do wonders and you’ll have a hot, steamy bowl of flavorful beef and fresh vegetables in front of you in no time — to be exact, less than 30 minutes from the second you pull everything needed out of the fridge to the second you sit down at the table to eat.

Beef Stir Fry

1 tablespoon sesame oil
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 lb. beef (i.e. flank steak), cut into thin slices
2 carrots, julienned
1 onion, very thinly sliced
3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon, finely chopped fresh ginger
Pinch of sugar
Salt and freshly ground pepper
2 cups broccoli, cut into small florets
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1/4 cup oyster sauce
Water, as needed

Heat 1 tablespoon of the sesame oil and 1 tablespoon of the olive oil in a wok over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking, then stir-fry beef until just cooked through, about a minute or so. With a slotted spoon, remove the beef to another bowl and keep warm, loosely covered with foil.

Add remaining tablespoon olive oil to wok along with the carrots, onion, ginger and garlic. Cook stirring, for about a minute then add the sugar, salt and pepper and cook about a minute longer. Add the broccoli to the wok and cook about two minutes longer.

Add soy sauce and oyster sauce and bring to a boil. If necessary, add a bit of water. Return meat to skillet and cook, stirring, until sauce is thickened, about 2 minutes more.
